The Museum of Oddities 
2012-Present

This Museum is an ongoing collection of archived objects and sculptural installations first appeared in the depths of the club of Brunnen 70 (2012-2013).

It was originally inspired by the English Freak show circus and fairground oddities, as well as found useless everyday ‘junk’.

Over the years it existed, the Museum has built up its own style of oddities and one off freaks, and was open to the public once a week with an interactive performance or guided tour.

The Museum of oddities is full of curiosities with bizarre history, anatomical atrocities, medical mishaps, offbeat art, unsolved mysteries, bizarre inventions, antiques and taxidermy.
The museum intends to leave you with a playful desire of the unknown.

‘Freaks, prodigies or marvels of nature were essential components of popular entertainment in Europe and America. What was saleable as far as the freak show was concerned was, of course, physical difference, in a form both marketable and palatable.’

‘The showman was an essential component in this process and it was part of his “art” to take objects with a particular peculiarity and transform them into an attraction. The relationship between the presenter and the exhibit was key in producing the sideshow exhibition.’

Künstler zwischen Selbstinszenierung und Selbstreflexion

Samstag, 25 Mai 2013: 19 Uhr: Performance von Su-Ran Sichling,

Für drei Tage zeigt die Ausstellung zwölf künstlerische Positionen, die sich mit dem Bild des Künstlers zwischen Selbstinszenierung und Selbstreflexion beschäftigen.

Ausgehend von der Fragestellung, ob und wie sich der Blick des Künstlers auf das eigene  Schaffen seit Beginn seiner künstlerischen Ausbildung gewandelt hat, wurden  Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin und London eingeladen ihre Auseinandersetzung mit diesem  Thema zu zeigen.

Ihre Videoarbeiten, Fotografien, Installationen und Performances sind von 24. 5. – 26. 5.2013  in den Kellerräumen eines Wohnhauses der Martin-Luther-Straße 1, 01099 Dresden zu sehen.

Deep in the valleys of the scottish midlothians stands rosslyn chapel, a unique object in the architectural world. It was a mojor center for the crusading knights templar, and many believe it still holds their lost treasures. Could the mummified head of Jesus Christ, or the true holy grail lie in the vaults below?

In the center of the church stands the apprentices pillar, a double helix in stone, a magnificent collumn. Legend tells that the master mason went on a journey to obtain designs for the complex peice, but when he returned the apprentice had already completed the column. In a jealous rage, the master struck the apprenti- ce dead with a hammer.

My proposal is to populate the dixieland gallery with a forest of pillars, made from dickmanns, mini dickmans and flower pots. I have been thinking about when the creative process becomes traumaticly exessive, when it cannot be forced to fit the established order, and we are compelled to flush it away.

Dixiland ist ein mobiler, interdisziplinärer Aktionsraum, der für  Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum konzipiert ist.

Dixiland besteht aus zwei, miteinander verbundenen, Dixiklokabinen. Das  Äußere bleibt dabei original belassen, das Innere  ist ein leerer, von seinen Originalfunktionen befreiter, Raum, der frei gestaltet werden kann.

Die Auswahl der genauen Standorte und Projekte findet  über  verschiedene themenbezogene Ausschreibungen statt. Es wird darauf Wert gelegt dass die Arbeiten ortspezifisch funktionieren. Die Projektvorschläge werden erst intern vor ausgewählt, und im Anschluss durch einen unabhängigen Beirat beschlossen.

Mit Dixiland wollen wir einen lustvoll, ironischen Ort der  Kommunikation erschaffen, der sowohl zu kritischen Auseinandersetzung anregen soll, als auch das Interesse an alternativen Prozessen im Stadtraum wecken will. Dixiland simuliert eine Baustelle in Entwicklung, es stimuliert zum umgestalten urbaner Räume und Handlungsmöglichkeiten. Dixiland bildet durch seine Größe und seinen provisorischen Charakter einen Gegenüber zu festen monomentalen Funktionsräumen und feiert so unbestimmte Orte, Baulücken und andere Zwischenräume.
